Since 1895, the Venice Biennale has become one of the most important stages for contemporary artists from all over the world. China debuted at the Venice Biennale in 2005 and has participated ever since. At the 54th Venice Biennale, the China Pavilion will be an aromatic and dreamland for visitors. With his installation All Matters Are Visible, Yang Maoyuan will be present at the Venice Biennale as one of five selected Chinese artists.
On the ground of the cistern, visitor will find thousands of medicine pots. They belong to the installation All Things Are Visible ( Chinese name as “器”)created by YANG Maoyuan. Nothing will be contained in the pots in addition to the smells of herb medicine. Traditional Chinese medical prescriptions will be carved on the interior of these pots and their outside will be decorated with traditional designs.
This installation can explain the theory of traditional Chinese medicine and its current developing situation. “According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, all things are visible, be it the acupuncture points, meridians or collaterals,” Yang illustrated, “however, they do not exist at all to modern science.” Visitors can get one small pot as a gift by chance.
