“Tao of Nature - 2011 Chinese Abstract Art Exhibition (group) “was the first time for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai to introduce an exhibition with the theme of abstract which was specially planned by the senior curator Li Xu, and has assembled 18 famous artists from Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Shenzhen and Macau, involving art schools specializing in painting, sculpture, installation and video, While reviewing and discussing the abstract aesthetic legacy in China, the exhibition aims to reflect the achievements and highlight contemporary abstract art in China.

“Tao of Nature”, which comes from chapter 25 of Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching: “The ways of man are conditioned by those of earth, the ways of earth by those of heaven, the ways of heaven by those of Tao, and ways of Tao by those of nature." In Taoism, the dual nature of materialism and spirituality are viewed as the perfection of Tao, and is viewed as the highest level achievable. As for art, spontaneity refers to a state of freely writing and drawing. It is also the highest level pursued by an artist through his whole life.

Abstract art cannot be expressed in narrative language, but it can cause a wide range of emotional resonance in the human heart. In the last decade, people have paid more attention and thought higher of abstract art as always being on the edge of contemporary art. Nowadays exhibitions about abstract art have been active throughout the country, and this exhibition is the very pinnacle of the expressive quality of abstract art in China.

Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art also hopes to provide an opportunity for the public to get access to abstract art through this exhibition and continue to make the cultural characteristics of Shanghai flourish.
