White Space Beijing announced the opening of Yang Hongwei's solo exhibition EBB at WHITE SPACE BEIJING on November 17, 2012.
Yang Hongwei started trying to work on wood engraving in 1994, which, compared with wood cut on plank as commonly used, requires higher artistry in carving as well as greater patience and control in order to achieve the perfect combination of complex natural texture and artificial beauty of engraving on the much too hard cross-section of logs.
His large-scale works, Tian Yi Sheng Shui, among others, fruit of his efforts in wood cut in more than a decade, go beyond the constraint of the size of the blocks, eliminating thus the reliance on "printing" in conventional printmaking and redefining wood engraving as an activity to awaken "the nature of wood". While showcasing his recent tours de force, EBB will also reflect on the subjectivity underlying craftsmanship.
In 2011 Yang Hongwei was admitted to a Ph.D. programme under the supervision of Prof. Xu Bing in Printmaking Department, CAFA. Born in1968 in Tianjin, he is now an associate Professor at CAFA, currently lives and works in Beijing.
