‘ILLUMINATIONS’ presents artworks created by a new generation of Taiwanese artists who have become recognised for their innovation across a range of creative media.
The curatorial concept draws inspiration from French writer Arthur Rimbaud’s prose poems ‘Illuminations’, which were influential on the Surrealist art movement. His abstract writing encouraged artists to abandon conventional values and instead create images full of free associations; and thus the European avant-garde was born.
The ubiquitous presence of digital technology has also encouraged the development of a new way of thinking about and making art. It has stimulated a new avant-garde to develop in Taiwan. This is evident in the current generation of artists who are using trends in digital technology as means to revamp traditional art techniques such as painting, sculpture and video, as well as to find more experimental ways to express their perspectives.
The works include highly stylised videos that appropriate the Western tradition of the portrait and still life with the introduction of Asian subjects; interactive sound and moving image installations, surrealistic and ‘outsider art’ styled animations, and paintings reminiscent of scenes from popular computer games. They initiate a fresh dialogue between the contemporary and media arts, which is emerging within the broader cultural context of Taiwan.
