Sifang Art Museum is pleased to announce its new exhibition titled “Mountain sites, Views of Laoshan”, on view from June 5th to October 4th 2016.
Held in the mountain ranges of LaoShan where Sifang Art Museum is located, this exhibition presents new projects of twenty Chinese-speaking artists in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor spaces. Using sites such as museum space, forest, lake, grassland, village and historical ruins, the artists develop site-specific, project-based works in various mediums: sculpture, installations, performances, sound and video works, with which they inscribe themselves into the structural, historical and social contexts of the local area.
As the second episode of the museum’s long-term “Topography Project”, they have set their eyes on the existing context in the Lao mountain ranges, where nature, history, reality, and even contemporary art spaces together provided the basis for artistic creation. During the year-long preparation for this exhibition, aside from the ground research work carried out by the museum team, all artists were invited for multiple site visits in a way similar to sight-seeing, and the conceptualisation process happened naturally and evolved with every visit. Some artists have decided to take month-long residencies on site to further bonds with the mountain sites while spontaneously developing their ideas.
The boundary of art outside its traditional protective zones has been extended and questioned here. The artists have been taken out of their comfortable studio practices and are challenged to work with specific sites and are expected to comment, contradict or even open up entirely new conversations. Acting as a departure from today’s rapid art production, each artist has taken a much slower, project-based approach, with each having enjoyed the process of doing so.
