Born in the 1940s, Liang Shaoji, Li Shan, and Lynn Hershman Leeson, these avant-garde figures have spent decades investigating fundamental questions through diverse media including painting, video, and installation, exploring profound inquiries into life, humanity, and technology. ShanghART opens"Future in the Mirror," bringing together works by the influential artists Liang Shaoji, Li Shan, and Lynn Hershman Leeson in Beijing.
Central to the exhibition is their engagement with mirrors—both as physical entities reflecting the material world and digital interfaces redefining spatiotemporal dimensions. As film theorist Christian Metz suggests, the mirrored image functions not merely as a representation of reality but emerges as a "conscious fantasy."

Over the past half-century, the three artists have consistently challenged boundaries of media and concept, each presenting distinctive investigations into future possibilities. Featured works include Liang Shaoji's kiln-formed glass installation "Ice Bed" revealing silk-like traces of life, Li Shan's experimental imagery derived from "restructuring" biological genes, and Lynn Hershman Leeson's prophetic allegories of human-machine symbiosis through her "cyborg" films. Together, they transform technological speculation into artistic reality, suggesting new perspectives on human destiny. Coinciding with the Lunar New Year, this exhibition seeks to create an imaginative space for dialogue where tradition and futurity intersect.
