The Old Brothers: A Duo Exhibition of Guang Jun and Sun Jiabo Displaying at Shanshang Art Museum

Featuring the works by two widely respected artists Guang Jun and Sun Jiabo, “The Old Brothers” is a duo exhibition presented by Shanshang Art Museum in Dalian. Both Prof. Guang and Prof. Sun were born in the 1930s, and they started to know each other when they were enrolled in the High School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts and both of them were admitted to the Central Academy of Fine Arts (abbr. CAFA) to major respectively in printmaking and sculpture. Even though they were separated for several years after they graduated, they finally reunited at CAFA for their further pursuits of art.

Taking the sense of imagination, relaxation as well as humanism as its clue, the exhibition covers works in various media including sketches, ink and color paintings, prints, oil paintings, lacquer paintings, sculptures and so on. With a diversified visual presentation, it conveys a graceful and humorous context that Prof. Guang and Prof. Sun have experienced in their oeuvres.

Prof. Guang Jun was born in 1938 in Shenyang, Liaoning province. He graduated from the High School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1959. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1964. He graduated from the printmaking graduate class of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1980, and stayed at CAFA to teach. He once served as the Director of the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, professor, academic committee member and doctoral supervisor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and the Director of the Printmaking Art Committee of the China Artists Association. His representative works include “Returning from the North of the Great Wall”, “Lotus Picking Painting”, “Memories of the Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Day)”, “One Night of Spring Breeze”, etc., and his works are collected by the National Art Museum of China, the British Museum, the Library of Lyon in France, the French Woodcut Association and Dr. Ludwig of Germany.

17 Prof. Sun Jiabo.pngProf. Sun Jiabo

Prof. Sun Jiabo was born in 1939 in Beijing. He graduated from the High School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1959. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1965. He graduated from the postgraduate class of the Department of Sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1980, and stayed at CAFA to teach. He is currently a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Consultant to the Academic Committee of CAFA, and Supervisor of the First Studio of the Department of Sculpture at CAFA. His representative works include “Old Beijing”, “Portrait of Cao Yu”, “Portrait of Lao She”, “Big Girl”, “Mother”, “Portrait of Laozi”, and so on. His wood sculpture “A Girl Picking Hawkthorn” won the Bronze Award at the 6th National Fine Art Exhibition, and the pottery sculpture “Return of the Shepherd” won the Academic Award of “20th Century China”.
