Painting, Wandering: Liu Shangying's recent paintings are presented at FutureLand Art Center

Themed on “Painting, Wandering”, the latest solo exhibition by Prof. Liu Shangying from the Central Academy of Fine Arts is on display at the FutureLand Art Center in Beijing. Curated by French curator Olivier Kaeppelin, the exhibition focuses on Liu Shangying’s latest on-site paintings at the southern and northern foothills of the East Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang from 2022 through to 2024, and it also includes his practice in outdoor paintings in Lop Nur, Altyn Mountains in Xinjiang, and Ejina Banner in Inner Mongolia from 2016 through to 2021. The exhibition aims to trigger a further discussion about the uncertain feature between the individual and nature, the individual and art that Liu Shangying are concerned with during his wandering journey.

About the Artist

Portrait of Liu Shangying.pngBorn in 1974 in Kunming, Yunan, Liu Shangying belongs to the Mongolian ethnic group of China. He currently works as Professor and Vice Dean of the Department of Oil Painting at CAFA. He teaches at the Third Studio of the Department of Oil Painting at CAFA, lives and works in Beijing.

Liu graduated from the Attached Middle School of CAFA in 1995, and he got a BA from the Second Studio, Department of Oil Painting at CAFA in 1999 and an MA from the Third Studio, Department of Oil Painting at CAFA in 2004. Since 2011, he has made a number of trips to do large-size paintings from life in Ngari in Tibet and Ejin Banner in Inner Mongolia. Based on these painting sites, he finished “Lake Manasarovar” series and “Desert Poplars and the Sand” series that touched upon pictorial expression in the primordial field and the relationship between painting and nature. With his paintings and his actions going hand in hand, he mixes himself with the natural world since time immemorial, therefore entering into a dialogue with nature via the action of painting to gain multi-dimensional experience and encourage reflection. His important solo exhibitions include: “Painting, Wandering” (FutureLand Art Center, 2024), “Who’s Painting” (Star Gallery, 2021), “Walking Between Worlds” (TAG Art Museum, 2022), “Living Natures” (Hongcheng Relics, Ejina Banner, Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, 2017), “A Blue Mountain Looms into the Town” (Changshu Art Museum, 2016), “Myriad Visions Rise from the Void” (National Art Museum of China, 2015), “Fleeting” (Inside-out Art Museum, 2013).
