“Mote”— Hu Mingzhe’s Exhibition Unveiled at National Art Museum of China

On the afternoon of May 7th, 2011, “Mote”—exhibition of Hu Mingzhe’s art works opened at the National Art Museum of China, Beijing. Chaired by Tan Ping who is the Deputy Chancellor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, its’ opening ceremony invited Jin Shangyi, the honorary chairman of Chinese Artists Association, Pan Gongkai, president of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Zhang Xiaoling, vice president of National Art Academy of China to be present and Fan Di’an, curator of National Art Museum of China as its academic director.

The exhibition displays more than 30 pieces of rock color paintings, several historical documents on rock color and video art “ Mote” from Prof. Hu Mingzhe who works at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Hu Mingzhe is the founder of the conception of rock color painting and this exhibition can be taken as a summary and reflection of the development in Chinese rock color painting in the last twenty years. The "rock color", which was created in 1996, is a new concept in Chinese art circles. It’s a kind of painting made by grinded particles of colorful rocks being reconciled with colloid. It arouses general concerns among Chinese arts communities for its natural aesthetic qualities and its embedded philosophy that man is an integral part of nature. Several national seminars were held by relevant scholars to deliberate on this topic.

For twenty years, Hu was inspired by this natural material. She expands her horizon and mind, focuses on the relationship between human beings and the universe, feeling the greatness of the nature and the insignificance of human beings. While her way of creation is becoming more natural, her idealistic stature is getting more profound. Finally, the rock color has evolved into a symbol of her view of the world—"Mote". The word mote comes from Buddhism, which means that the constituent part of everything in the universe is made of tiny particles, and its immensity is beyond limitation, as is its smallness. The history of rock color painting represents Chinese society, which has transformed from a traditional to a modern one. The world view on the mote reminds people, who are in the real world of value disturbance and material desire, to be aware of the essence of life, and keep the purity of our spirit along with the harmony of the nature.
