Chen Shuxia's Studio--Video

Xi Chuan who works as a  journalist for Art Intern once commented in an article published in 2008 that if there were one word to describe Chen Shuxia’s paintings, it would be “poetic.” Actually, she makes this word self-update to accommodate her paintings. Viewers feel something beautiful, quiet, self-sufficient and free as they view her canvasses. Among those painters of the new generation with works commonly flaunted as cynical, intranquil, dangerous, angry, satiric, and ugly, there is no place for Chen Shuxia.

He goes on to say that: "like the Chinese proverbial Monkey King (Sun Wukong) who makes a circle to protect Monk Tang, Piggy and Monk Sha, Chen Shuxia, too, makes a safe space. The difference is that she makes the circle for herself to jump into. Unless she walks herself out, all evils are powerless to break into it. She is not an iconic painter (though she has her own icons), nor a language painter (though she uses her own language); it seems that rather we should call her an emotional painter, who creates her own world and with her paintings invites you to take a trip into her the deepest corners of her mind." 1
