"Van Gogh and the Amsterdam Impressionists", which opened in the afternoon of September 2nd, features 11 pieces of oil painting works composed by world-famous artist Vincent Van Gogh and several other Amsterdam impressionists of the same age such as Isaac Israëls, George Breitner, Willem Witsen, Eduard Karsen and Willem de Zwart. Sponsored by the Municipal Government of Amsterdam and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, it is co-organized by Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Capital Museum and will run until October 9.

Van Gogh's Self-Portrait in 1887 (an oil on board) is the highlight of the exhibition, which will be the first in China to meet with the audience. Born in 1853, William Vincent Van Gogh, a famous Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, pioneer of Expressionism, his works deeply influenced the 20th century painting. Van Gogh’s works, such as “Sunflower,” “wheat fields with crows” and “Van Gogh self-portrait,” etc., now on a global scale are well known, highly artistic value. Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is the world’s largest collection works of Van Gogh Museum, the three works are also in this collection.Van Gogh arrived in Paris in 1886, full of curiosity about the new painting techniques adopted by French impressionists such as Claude Monet. He tried to adopt their vivid colours and loose brushwork. As poor as Van Gogh was then, he did not have the money for a model and he used himself as a model and painted on the cheapest possible material — cardboard.

Lu Wei, Vice Mayor of Beijing, said, "This exhibition is a major event of the Beijing-Amsterdam cultural exchange programs. The show provides a perfect opportunity for visitors not only to appreciate the aesthetic beauty brought by the Dutch master painters at close range, but also to learn more about the splendid culture and history of the country." 11 other paintings by well established Dutch contemporaries mainly demonstrate the Dutch cultural landscape at the end of the 19th century, reflecting the era of the great achievements known as the Second Golden Age of the Netherlands.
