"Mock-up: Architecture of Spatial Art, 2012" marks a brand new start for MoCA Shanghai. The exhibition focuses on contemporary Chinese living spaces. While it considers the basic relationship between people and their living environments, it also extends multiple links between living spaces and the city.
The exhibition is inspired by daily living spaces. MoCA Shanghai is divided into ten domestic spaces, including a living room, kitchen, study, bedroom, bathroom, etc. Correspondingly, ten teams of architects are invited to employ conceptual designs to express their understanding and interpretation of their respective spaces. It is an architect-dominated exhibition combined with artists' interactions and participation that will bring a diverse set of space designs and visitor experiences. Thus the spaces exhibited are not mere reproductions of household environments, but thought-provoking explanations of space as a repository for exploration. It may be strange and clash with common conceptions, but the strangeness will be an opportunity for audiences to rethink their habitual expectation of everyday living spaces, and even their approach to everyday life.
"Mock-up" is a novel venture that pushes far past the boundaries of ordinary art exhibitions. Based on the idea of "Reconstruct, Break and Represent Space," it breaks down conventional ideas of museum spaces, exhibition modes and general visiting methods, while enabling visitors to interact directly with architects, designers, artists and their works, and to naturally blend into the art spaces. Every corner of life will be full of art.
A series of art events will be held during the exhibition, such as curator and artist talks, designer salons, small concerts, book clubs, etc. These events are as much a part of the exhibition as the spaces themselves, as they transform the museum into a real public space of movement, culture and activity.
