Realism Oil Painting is an important part of the formation and development of art, it’s a kind of art form that was originally inherited from European oil painting traditions, but in the past hundred years, realism has been a dominant position in Chinese oil painting, and has also played a decisive role. For a century, Chinese realistic oil painters handed down the tradition from generation to generation, and created a lot of classical works, which has played an important role in the undertakings of Chinese culture and art education. Since China’s reforming and opening up, more and more Chinese people have been engaged in realistic painting, realistic painting has been accepted and loved fervently across the social environment, with a strong earthy realism to enrich the painting and an accumulation of lots of talented artists, the forces of realistic oil painting expand rapidly. At the same time, facing the impact waves from modern art and multi-culturalism, realistic painting ceased to be an onefold style, instead different forms of expression emerged such as classical realism, realistic realism, abstract realism, expressive realism, and so on. The realism painting in the new period appears like an active prosperity.

China Realism is a natural product born in the process of reforming and opening up in China, once named Beijng Realism, which was initiated by Ai Xuan, Yang Feiyun, Wang Yidong, and at the very beginning there was 13 artists, later Chen Yifei joined in. Suggested by Chen Yifei, it was officially renamed to “China Realism” since March in 2005, and the numbers of artists increased from 13 to 30. They are Ai Xuan, Yang Feiyun, Wang Yidong, Chen Yanning, Xu Mangyao, He Duoling, Liu Kongxi, Shang Ding, Yuan Zhengyang, Guo Runwen, Wang Hongjian, Chao Ge, Zhang Li, Long Liyou, Xia Xing, Li Shijin, Wang Yuqi, Xu Weixin, Zheng Yi, Weng Wei, Xin Dongwang, Pang Maokun, Leng Jun, Yin Xiong, Shi Liang, Li Guijun, Zhang Yibo, Zhu Chunlin, Wang Shaolun, and Chen Yifei(deceased), a total of 30 artists.

The team has a collection of the elite artists of Chinese oil painting, and it makes an impressive art perspective. Although they have different styles in their works, they claim to advocate rational spirit and traditional culture, adhering to the essence of Western oil painting from the “origin” of oil painting language and the connotation of oil painting blending with local deep cultural intension. They abide by this route all the time throughout the 9 years with remarkable achievements.

In the past nine years, some outstanding artists have joined the team, and now the number of artists is over 30. Although it cannot present the extreme perspective of realistic oil painting in China, “China realism” has a certain representation. After years of persistence, “China Realism” has continuously organized eight exhibitions, generally gained support and attention from academic circles and varied communities as well as constructive criticism. Every member has more or less stepped forward, as they are in their prime with the team is getting increasingly strengthened which proves to be a promising art school.

The exhibition “China Realism 2012” is held at the Chinese Academy of Oil Painting Art Museum from a China Realism’s academic view and artistic pursuit of high standards perfectly match the purpose of the Chinese Academy of Oil Painting, which complements each other forming a splendid contrast. The exhibition is expected to increase more academic perspectives to China Realism, enriching academic connotations with a display of art achievement made by Chinese Realism forecasting the promising development of Chinese oil painting.
