From May 23 to June 22, 2014, well-known spatial designer Professor Huang Jiancheng who had hosted the spatial design of the China Pavilions of two Expos, is about to launch the “Field•Huang Jiancheng Design” art exhibition at CAFA Art Museum, to present his representative design cases and that of his team in the last decade as well as an in-depth thinking on the related culture, environment, art and social issues, at the same time it will also hold international academic discussions to explore the ecology of international and Chinese contemporary design and development tendencies.
Huang Jiancheng revealed that the exhibition was named “art exhibition”, because he didn’t want to make an exhibition of design or case at the beginning, “I have combed through and classified my design history in the past over more than a decade, firstly participating in the shaping of the image of the nation, such as China Pavilion in Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan, the whole spatial design of the China Pavilion in Expo 2010 Shanghai, secondly participating in the shaping of cultural image, such as in cooperation with Japanese architect Arata Isozaki to finish the overall design of the integration of reconstruction and expansion of Hunan Provincial Museum. Thirdly, participating in the shaping of the urban image, doing related urban software design, public spatial art planning and design for cities, new towns, parks and urban landmark buildings, etc., such as public art, visual image design, etc. These national landmark designs are certainly associated with a lot of social relationships and fields, which are also our practicing background, while the exhibition aims at presenting and discussing how to position design in this relationship, how to constantly develop design in a dynamic structure, we expect the design world, cultural world and the social form from all walks of life so that they can use this exhibition and discussion as a platform to discuss these issues.”
On the one hand, the exhibition uses the selected images, the models of design, image, etc., to showcase the representative spatial design cases of Huang Jiancheng’s team, such as China Pavilion in Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan, China Pavilion and “Urban People” Theme Pavilion of Expo 2010 Shanghai, integration design of Hunan Provincial Museum regarding the spatial show design as the core, meanwhile for the exhibition he specially creates conceptual installation work, which is rich in spatial expressive force and visual observation. On the other hand, on the contemporary Chinese and international level it showcases the multiple fields of design, such as government will/capital power, social demand/ academic creation, and practical/ exploratory, college education/ real-time demand etc., a variety of different factors leading to dynamic responses and their ongoing multi-direction exploration, to extend the discussion of reconstructing the cultural value of contemporary design, positioning of designers, education of art design, etc.
The exhibition curator Professor Yu Ding, Vice President of the School of Humanities, CAFA said the current boom of domestic urban renovation and construction offered the designers a huge market for opportunity and a performing stage, how to harmoniously unify the relationships between design and various elements such as society, culture, art, capital becomes a proposition that modern design and contemporary designers have to think about. “Field” is both a spatial relation and a social relation. For the exhibition, “field” carried the conceptual spatial expression of Huang Jiancheng and his team, while it also marked the social status of Huang Jiancheng and his design team.
