Many artists relish removing the distance between the viewer and the work. The young artist Zhao Lu, however, is not one such artist. His practice has long been formed by a concerted exploration of this gap.
In Zhao Lu's eyes, the world is laminated; there is a layer between us and it's true nature. From the cells of our bodies to the upper reaches of the stratosphere, where there is life there is this layer. Whether in our conscious or preconscious, behind all forms there is a richer world than we know. True communication between people and people, as well as people and things, is doomed to be incomplete. Zhao Lu believes the only way access the real reality is face to the distance between people and people, people and things. Overall, his work attempts to expand this distance, so as to render a deeper, more equal exchange possible.
This exhibition is not only a complete presentation of artist Zhao Lu's creative output over the past few years, but also the first exhibition of contemporary art since Poly Art Centre established. Over 600 square meters, the artist brings to us the world, laminated.
