Zhang Shengquan (Datong Dazhang, 1966-2000), was born in Hebei Province and he has lived in Beijing, Chongqing, Guiyang and Datong. He hanged himself at home on 1st January, 2000 so that he gave up his life to complete the last art performance in his life. In his brief but legendary life, he left behind a large number of manuscripts, sketches, art programs and art notes, enabling himself among one the cases worthy of studying in the field of Chinese contemporary art.
This exhibition will be the first comprehensive art exhibition which includes all of his creations, the most important works in his life, those manuscripts he could not achieve, as well as numerous artistic notes and poems. Datong Dazhang believed that art should be limited to thinking, thus he aspired after pure and free spirit of art, he changed a lot of art fantasy into “mailing art” spreading them to the world, which influenced a large number of his contemporaries and later artists.
