“Ink As Superior–Solo Exhibition of Kan Tai-keung” will be unveiled in Fei Gallery on Jan 10, 2016, presenting the ink works by Dr. Kan, who is reputed as the “Father of Hong Kong Design”, during his brand new stage of creation from 2011 to 2015.
Since engaging in ink paintings in 1970’s, Dr. Kan has incorporated the tactics and exploration of Mr. Lv Shoukun and Mr. Wucius Wong in the fields of abstract inkwash experiment and design constitution aesthetics, and integrated the pattern of ancient style Chinese mountain and water painting into his grand and magnificent “mountain-and-water calligraphy”. Combining the sentiments of traditional inkwash of the East and the design concepts of the West, he successfully creates a unique contemporary style. While his previous works might be viewed as results from the exploratory process of learning from ancient masters and the Nature, his recent works can be regarded as a quest of following the heart of an artist who has exceeded the age of “freewheeling”, i.e., 70 years old, according to Confucius. His intense sense of belonging of Chinese traditional literati spirit, the longtime influence of the dynamic and diversified urban spirit of Hong Kong as well as his own thorough dialectical speculation on his almost legendary life story have all been naturally transformed into dots of ink in his paintings, exhibiting great tensity.
With the intention of presenting the audience with the holistic state of the artist’s recent work, this exhibition will present not only large-scale masterpieces such as consisted of 12 scrolls, which maximally manifests the artist’s “mountain-and-water calligraphy”, but also a number of moderate-sized masterworks and sketches that are just expressions of the artist’s unfettered and fancy-free mind.
Kan Tai-Keung has always dedicated himself to the education of design and the promotion of social culture, and has been a forthgoer and pioneer in the field of art education in Greater China. Therefore, the exhibition will not only present excellent inkwash paintings of Dr. Kan, but also arrange a series of relevant seminars and workshops to provide the fans with the opportunity of intimately interacting and exchanging ideas with their idol. Your participation is warmly welcomed.
